Psalm 8: Praising the Greatness of God

Psalm 8 is a beautiful song. In previous Psalms, we’ve seen a similar theme from King David asking God to protect him. Psalm 8 is a bit different. In this Psalm we see David worshipping God and talking about his greatness.

When you look at David’s life you see a lot of pain followed by triumphs. David made many mistakes. He slept with a married woman, had her husband killed, and failed to discipline his son Absalom.

However he was also called the man after “God’s Own Heart”, and when you do an overview of his life, you see it.

His life was rough, he was hunted and at war for most of it. However, he always turned to God and worshipped him.

When David failed, he acknowledged his sin and refocused on God.

This is how we need to be as Christians following Jesus. More often than not we make mistakes, we are humans with a sinful nature and God knows that.

I’m not saying that gives us a license to sin, when you sin, don’t hold yourself back from God. He’s there waiting for you to come back and be restored.

Why would the God of creation send his son to die for you, raise him from the dead, and save your soul give up on you?

He won’t, 100% of the time, we give up on God.

That is why he sits with his arms open waiting for us. He wants us to come home, he wants to forgive us, and he wants to heal us.

We get in our way.

Psalm 8

Psalm 8: A Psalm Written by David to Worship God.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
    in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8:1-9 Commentary and Breakdown

I’ve said this a few times but Psalm 8 has beauty to it. This song shows us how amazing nature is, and how awesome God is for creating it.

We often spend too much time being busy and worrying about the next best thing, and we miss out on so much of our lives.

An old phrase says, “Stop and smell the roses.” This phrase isn’t lost on me, it shouldn’t be on you either. We need to slow down and appreciate God and the creation he’s blessed us with.

If we do, we might even see things accelerate because we will no longer make things happen. Instead, we will spend time with God, and he will do amazing work in our lives.

  • How often do you stop and praise God?
  • Do you think of him throughout the day?
  • Have you stopped and silenced the world so you can hear his voice today?

This is our calling, and when we do them God will show up mightily because we live every day with him.

Recently in my life, I’ve come to realize that I’m constantly moving, but never spending time with Jesus. This is how David was able to survive.

Our connection to God is the most important part of our lives. It’s a greater need than food, water, or air. God is the most important part of our lives, and we push him aside regularly.

He IS the source of life, the one who created us.

When God said I am to Moses, he wasn’t just saying I am me. he was saying he is the source of it all. Everything that has ever existed or ever will exist comes from him.

He has always been and he always will be. We exist because he loves us and wants to share his existence with people who love him.
