Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone; I know that sounds harsh but it’s reality. I’ve been in this realm for the last few years and it’s hard. Being an entrepreneur isn’t a walk in the park.

In fact, I’ve wanted to say screw this and quit many times. Take a second and look at my blog post dates. You’ll see a huge gap between August of 2020 and January of 2020.

I gave up for a little while, and that’s ok because I needed a break. However I’m back now, and I know some of you are ready to quit, and you need some encouragement.

Entrepreneurship Isn’t For Everybody, and here’s why.

To be a good entrepreneur you need a few things, and if you don’t have them it’s fine, however, I suggest figuring this all out first before you begin.

  1. You need to be passionate about the business topic.
  2. Don’t move without a vision of what you’re doing.
  3. Have a plan and contingencies in place.
  4. Get a mentor.

Entrepreneurs Need Passion:

One thing I’ve learned while working for myself is that I need passion, and back in August I was burnt out. So I stopped writing. There was nothing left in me.

I was making .01 cents per day (the big money), and my effort wasn’t matching the reward.

So I took a few months off, and I reevaluated things. My snowboarding site SnoFallGear was doing great. So I decided to focus on that.

However, there has been something burning inside of me, wanting to come out and share here again.

Because I know if you’re reading this, you’re in a spot of doubt. I’ll tell you this if you don’t have passion for your idea you need to reevaluate what you’re doing.

Life is short, do what you love, and if you aren’t passionate about your business, make some changes. Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone, but that’s because not everyone will put the work in.

There’s a lot of late nights, early mornings (usually back to back). the only thing that will get you through is passion.

Don’t Move Without A Vision:

If you have a passion that’s good, but vision is what will guide and direct you. Vision is what your end goal will look like, and vision is what guides you on your path.

If you don’t have vision, passion will drive you in circles.

Have A Plan;

Passion pushes you forward, the vision is the destination, and the plan keeps you in line.

The plan is like bumpers when you’re bowling. It keeps you going in the right direction while focused on the plan ahead.

Entrepreneurship Isn’t For Everyone; Get a Mentor

Find someone who’s been where you are, and pick their brain. Recently I met up with a guy in the furniture industry. I didn’t think we had much in common at first. However, we started talking about internet marketing and clicked.

You never know who you’ll meet, and who can give you valuable information.

The last few months I’ve experienced some massive problems. My job has been increasingly stressful, my mother in the hospital, and my finances aren’t where I want them to be. This has caused major feelings of depression and heartache. I’ve felt like giving up was my only option.

Are You Giving Up, Or Letting Go?

Giving Up And Letting Go Are Not The Same Action. The Former Is Offering Full Surrender To The Situation, While The Later Offers Freedom From The Situation.

The Difference Between Giving Up And And Letting Go.

When you give up, it usually means you’re fearful, or doubting yourself. When you give up you surrender to those emotions. It causes pain and heartbreak to do this.

Letting go means freedom. You’re not trapped by your emotions, instead you’re focused on the future, believing things can be better.

A good rule of thumb to check and see what you’re experiencing involves how you feel. When you’re tired frustrated and can’t focus it means you’re trapped by negative emotions. At that point, you need to let things go.

A Word For Giving Up?

If I would sum Giving up in one word, it’s be Surrender. People tend to surrender when they can no longer fight, see a way out, or if they’re tired of fighting.

When you surrender, you place yourself in a position of servitude. This service might be to a person, but nowadays it’s a mindset.

  • You Failed At Your Business. So Now You Think Of Yourself As A Failure.
  • Maybe The Girl (Or Guy) You Loved Didn’t Love You Back? So Now You’ll Always Be Unloved.
  • You’re Trying To Have Kids, But You Can’t Make It Work. Now You Feel Useless As A Person.

In all of these situations, you’re surrendering to the situation, and a dangerous mindset. Just because you failed once doesn’t mean you’ll fail again.

Why Do People Give Up?

I think people stop trying because they grow tired of fighting. In my own life I’m currently fighting this issue. At the time of this writing it’s 2020 and I’m living in Minneapolis.

We’ve Had:

  • A Presidential Impeachment
  • Fires In Australia
  • Beer Bug Shutdowns
  • Riots

That’s what I remember, and it’s only August. I’m tired, I want to give up. Just this last week I thought about quitting my job by walking out. And for the last month, I have written on this blog, or my snowboard blog called SnoFallgear.

Ultimately, we all have have to make a decision. Should we be controlled by our emotions? Or should we us them to propel us. In my book Hurricane Jerald, I write a lot about fear, and fear parallels surrender,

  • Fear Freezes You In Place
  • Or Causes You To Run (Sometimes It’s Really Weird)
  • It Overwhelms Emotions
  • Fear Stops You From Thinking Clearly.
  • It Causes You To Give Up, And Surrender.

This is why fear needs to be dealt with. You can’t let the fear overwhelm your life, and you have to deal with it immediately. Check out my post about dealing with fear here for more information.

What Does It Mean By Letting Go?

Dealing with your fear is the first part to letting go. When you decide to let go, fear will fill your heart, and it’ll make things difficult.

However if you press through the emotions, and fight the fear, you’ll realize that life is better when fear propels you. Don’t let it paralyze you.

That’s The First Step To Letting go.

In my early 20s I was dating a girl and believed her to be the one. She was everything I wanted in my life, and she gave me every indication that I was the same for her. It was a fairy tale relationship.

However, when things aren’t right, they fall apart, and that’s what happened to us.

For her there was no giving up, for her I needed to let go.

For the next few months I had to dig into some serious emotions, and I talked with a lot of friends.

Talking With Friends Is The Second Step

While this doesn’t seem to be that important, it really is. It’s harder to let go, when you don’t have someone else anchoring you. It doesn’t matter what you do or where you go.

You need other people around you during this fight.

For example, I’m pretty sure that I had PTSD (undiagnosed) after coming home from Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi. I had lived down there for 4 1/2 years and during the last year Katrina came through.

During this time I found myself running a Shelter and Supply Depot. I had two full time jobs keeping a The Mississippi Gulf Coast And New Orleans supplied.

When I came home there were things I didn’t talk about for an entire year. they were eating me up inside. I had to let go of the pain I was holding onto.

So one night, a good friend of mine handed me a cup of coffee, and said start talking. I told him about horrible and amazing.

After that night, I don’t feel the tension anymore. It’s what letting things out can do for you.

Letting Go Doesn’t Mean Giving Up.

Giving up and letting go are similar, but the drive is the huge difference between the two of them.

When you’re letting go, you’re releasing emotions and feelings of attachment. These can be towards people, jobs, or material objects.

However letting go doesn’t mean you’re surrendering hope. Sometimes you’ll let go of someone, and deep in your heart there’s a feeling that things aren’t over yet.

Sometimes that feeling is crazy, so watch out. However it’s not something to hold onto, if it’s meant to be, it’ll be. If not, you’re fine and you’ll move on.

It’s a choice to make, once that’s done, everything else will fall into place. It just takes time.

How Do You Let Go Of Someone?

The age old question of a teenager. heartbreak in this life is inevitable. I remember my first heartbreak like it was yesterday. It was like a continual punch to the gut.

The reason letting go of someone is so hard, stems from how you viewed them, and how they viewed you.

In your heart you showed them who you are, and they turned and walked away from that.

How can you go on? When the person you loved saw you, and walked away?

Here’s How You Do It:

  • Don’t give Up On Love, That’s Easy To Do, But Someone Is Out There For You.
  • Wake Up Every Morning.
  • Eat Breakfast.
  • Get Ready To Face The World.

That’s what I do, I force myself to believe in myself, and God. I’m so tired of giving up. In everything I face, there’s something deeper, more intense out there.

Nothing is pointless, and everything is a learning experience.

Why Letting Go Is So Hard?

Letting go is hard, because it’s a shot to your pride, and your heart. People don’t like to admit they were wrong, even more so, they don’t like to admit that to other people.

That’s what makes it hard, and the more your heart is entwined. The harder it is to let go.

Why Letting Go Is So Important

Letting go is important, because you’re opening yourself up to new opportunities and situations.

When you give up, you’re surrendering and putting yourself in a position that doesn’t have the freedom of letting go.

Are You Thinking Of Giving Up?

I don’t know where you’re at in life, and that doesn’t matter. if you haven’t felt it yet, you will soon.

The heavy emotions of fear, depression, will try to force you to surrender. Don’t give into them.

  • Analyze The Situation.
  • Look For Your Exit Strategy.
  • Know when To Use That Strategy.

You’ve got this, whatever you’re facing I believe we all have the ability to fight, and do better.

Don’t give up, but feel free to let go.

What Do Entrepreneurs Do?

Entrepreneurs Are Dreamers, And Builders. They Are The Ones Who Problems And Develop Ways To Fix Them. Instead Of Following The Crowd, They Step Out On Their Own, Making Their Own Path. Entrepreneurs Aren’t Just Business Owners. They Are Problem Solvers And Visionaries.

I know that first paragraph sounds epic and hardcore, but being an entrepreneur is anything but that. What I wrote above was a top level view. I didn’t get into their day to day lives. The stress of getting a company off the ground, and the daily failures most entrepreneurs have to overcome.

What if I told you that every business started out as an entrepreneurial endeavor? Look at your phone, if it’s an iPhone, apple created it. Did you know Apple started out in a tiny garage.

That small group of people transformed countless areas of human life. All in 30 years time. This happened through determination, taking risks and going against the grain.

You may not know it now, but that’s what leads people to greatness.

What Is Entrepreneurship?

I’ll give you the general Websters Dictionary Term but I want to state that I’m using it as a jumping off point. People who start their own businesses, are a crazy breed. Usually they are passionate (about the business topic), they desire freedom, and they have to think outside the box.

That last one is crucial, and stops many would be entrepreneurs from success daily.

I’ve met many people in the “entrepreneurship” field, and I’ve seen a common factor in most of them.

They See Risk, But Do Not Run From It. Instead, They Look For Ways To Mitigate It. This Happens, While They Keep Their Eyes On Their Goals. This Keeps Them Moving Forward.

Building Your Own Business isn’t an easy task to accomplish. Currently I’m on the second year of my snowboarding company, and I haven’t seen a profit yet. However I’m excited for the upcoming season.

When you find something you’re passionate about, like with me and snowboarding. Working a 10-12 hour day is nothing. Last season I spent days at a time on a snowboard, just getting some training and gear right.

Why would I do that?

Because I’m a snowboarder, and I love it. I understand that my day job is a means to an end, it supports me, and keeps me afloat financially. I’m a writer and a snowboarder, and soon the world will know me for being both of those things.

The passion level is similar with many entrepreneurs. Only the topic changes. However if you find yourself passionless, maybe it’s time for a change. Start small and find something about it to love. I say this because being an entrepreneur is hard, and when times get hard, and it’s easier to surrender and walk away when there’s no passion.

What Jobs Do Entrepreneurs Have?

Every company has started out small. We’ve already talked about Apple, but google started small and they’re almost surpassing apple (at least by the time of this writing).

Entrepreneurs can have any job, any background, ethnicity, skin color, sexual orientation, or disability. I believe are deeper beings than what we see on the outside. The outside is arbitrary but the inside, the depth of a person.

A funny question I got asked once involved someone who wanted to become an entrepreneur. “What entrepreneur jobs are out there?”

I was shocked, and then added, they don’t exist. They must be created. If you’ve continued reading and you’re still interested in entreprenuership, and the freedom it brings. Ask yourself the following

  1. What Are You Passionate About?
  2. Can You Monetize It With A Decent Profit?
  3. How Much Work Would This Take?
  4. Is It Worth The Time?
  5. Are You Passionate Enough About This Topic To See It Through?

Times are going to get rough, and those 5 questions above are NOT a business plan. They’re just a few simple questions to ask yourself, and if you feel good about your answers.

Entrepreneurs can be found in any field, and if they’re not in the one you’re thinking about, ask yourself why? Then ask how you can get into it?

The world is your oyster, we all have a short time here, so it’s time for you to chase a dream.

What Does An Entrepreneur Do On A Daily Basis?

This one is somewhat hard to answer. Mainly because people are so different. I do my best writing between 2 and 3 in the morning, but if I follow those successful instagram posts. I’ll never be successful until I wake up around 4AM. This also includes reading thousands of books, working out regularly, and many other crazy things. While I’m not a success, I don’t think that has to do with anything.

I’ve started to look past the things people do, and started to look at why people do it. Working out in the morning can sharpen your mind, wake up the body, and get you going properly. I work out in the evening, because it calms my mind, tires my body, and gives me focus.

Here’s my advice, don’t follow someone else’s plan. Find out what you want to do, what you’re passionate about, and chase it down. Do it with your style, not someone else’s. Be organized, and stay flexible in everything you do.

For example, on a daily basis I go to my day job. while I’m there ideas come to my head. They might be article topics, business ideas, products to sell, and I write every one of those ideas down.

Then I start to flesh them out, usually at night or on the weekends, but this is an important part of the process because we all get crazy ideas. Perhaps someday I’ll post some of my crazier ideas, but not yet…

What Are The Responsibilities Of Being An Entrepreneur?

I’m continuing to post this, find your passion, and make it happen. That is what successful entrepreneurs do. It’s what drives them to accept the risk and chase their dreams.

When you get into entrepreneurship, many responsibilities will be thrust upon you, and as the business grows things will get a lot worse. I can’t promise it’ll even out but eventually it should. (Hopefully)

Depending on the field you’re in, you’ll have to pay attention to different things. Finances is one of them. Did you get paid for the last thing your company did? Are you paying all the vendors and bills you should be paying? How can you save money?

Finances are awful…but they’re a necessity. In fact, I’d say finances is one of the bigger responsibilities you’ll have to face outside of developing and growing the product or service you’re working on.

Entrepreneurs Are Resilient But Need Friends For Success.

Try writing your goals down, and share them with a few close friends. This will help them to encourage and hold you accountable.

When an entrepreneur tries to do it alone, they almost always fail. But when they have support, there’s a greater chance of succeeding.

Another thing I’ve noticed about entrepreneurship is the need to hold on. Persistence is key because starting and running a small business is difficult, and sometimes it feels impossible.

However when you persevere and hold onto your passion. You’ll see great things happen. It won’t happen right away, but you’ll begin to see the walls break, and things will open up to you.

Remember: it’s not a failure if you choose to learn from it.

Get Up, Learn From It, And Try Again. That extra knowledge will eventually help you win.

One of the biggest issues you’ll ever face in the business world is having a manager that loves to micromanage their people. Micromanagement is the bane of free thought. It kills collaboration, makes people feel inferior, and annihilates free thought.

For years I’ve been a student of leadership, and I’ve followed John Maxwell and learned a lot from him. One of the things he teaches is that leadership is influence, nothing more, and nothing less.

However the character of the leader matters a lot, because there the ones deciding where the group goes, how they’ll get there, and deciding how to treat people.

I know full well that I don’t have all the answers, and when I have a creative team to work with, I understand that we can come up with something better.

Top Reasons Micromanagement Doesn’t Work

As I started above when people micromanage, they tend to kill a lot of good options that are the natural output of a team.

What Micromanaging Does.

  1. It Kills Creativity
  2. Cuts Off Options; Giving Tunnel Vision
  3. Makes People Feel Inferior

It Kills Creativity:

Micromanagement Kills Productivity Because The Worker Is Constantly Dealing With Being Second Guessed By Their Manager. This Causes A Slow Down Of Efficiency. Instead Of Moving Fast On A Project They Get Bogged Down In The Weeds Of It. Micromanaging Adds Undo Stress And Extra Steps To The Process.

Cuts Off Options; Giving Tunnel Vision

When creativity is killed many people won’t be able to adapt and see problems that need to be solved, or if they do see it, they won’t like to address them. Many times people just put their head down and work in this situation.

Makes People Feel Inferior

Micromanagers tend to make people feel inferior, it’s one of the reasons tunnel vision comes into play. They don’t want to admit theirs a flaw to the manager, because the manager will talk down to them expecting more. However if the manager finds the issue themselves then they hear about it.

All in all, micromanaging breaks the spirit of a team, only uniting in a desire for their manager to go away.

Why Do People Micromanage?

I don’t have an exhaustive list, but as I think of managers I’ve worked with in the past. I can come up with a few reasons.

  1. They Are Insecure About Their Position
  2. The Manager Doesn’t Have The Skill To Lead, But Did For The Job
  3. They Don’t Trust The People Around Them

They Are Insecure About Their Position

Many managers get promoted and get excited because they’re earning extra money. However with more money comes more responsibility, and many people lack proper leadership and people skills for their jobs.

They have obtained a sense of authority, but don’t know how to exercise it. So instead of giving advice and trying to make things better for the team, they try to fix every little issue. People complain to them about others and they jump on the issues. All problems will fall in their wake.

It’s how a micromanager is born.

The Manager Doesn’t Have The Skill To Lead, But Did For The Job

This is a very common issue in the sales world, many great salesman have been promoted to a position called Sales Manager (or something like that). However what makes a good salesman doesn’t necessarily equate to a sales manager.

In the end they struggle to lead, and try to micromanage their team to sell exactly like they did. After all, that’s how they became successful right? Why wouldn’t it work for every one else? In the end these once great salesman burn out, and micromanagement takes another victim.

They Don’t Trust The People Around Them

I’ve seen in most of the micro managers I’ve dealt with, and it kind of encompasses the last few reasons as well. In reality those are micromanagers don’t trust the people around them.

And it shows.

This might occur because the employee has never been that trusted by the manager, or they could just be a giant self absorbed narcissist.

In todays business world, micromanagement rarely works. It’s something that needs to go away. However we are broken people living in a fallen world so that’s kinda doubtful.

Can Micromanagement Ever Be Considered Good?

The only place I can see it ever being good is in the military. Although I don’t necessarily see it as micromanagement. It’s more discipline. Now I’ve never been in the military, so hopefully I’ll get corrected if I’m wrong.

In the military everything is planned out from the top down. Your bunk is squared away, there’s a spot/place for every tool, and when they’re not in use they can be found easily.

Many of these factors are what micro managers are trying to achieve. Why don’t they achieve them?

A Few Reasons Why.

  1. The Military Is A Totally Different Beast Than An Office.
  2. People In The Military Have To Switch Jobs At A Moments Notice
  3. The Military Always Needs To Be At The Ready.

I could go into detail on those points, but I think they explain themselves. An office is a place where people go to work and make money. The money is used to live and support their families. Also remember they only spend 40-50 hours a week there and you’ll understand they have divided loyalties.

I don’t know of any of any closer example to micromanagement than this one, and it still doesn’t fit as well.

How To Deal With Micromanagement.

There are many ways to help a manager break away from micromanagement. However one of the best things to avoid, is challenging them outright. This always ends badly for the challenger, and you might get disciplined or fired. I DON’T recommend that…

Even If I’ve Tried It A Few Times…It Always Ended Badly.

  1. Jump Ahead And Tell The Manager About Future Potholes In The Plan
  2. Have Solutions Ready For Problems That Could Arise
  3. Help Them Brainstorm Ideas

Many of these ideas involve looking ahead seeing problems and mitigating them before the manager sees them. However you will have to tell the manager about them at one point or another. Depending on the project, you’ll have to make that decision.

However I always like to tell before the plan is implemented, and I ask them for feedback. This shows respect to the manager, and as snowboarders say on the mountain.

Respect Gets Respect

You need to earn their trust, and by showing them the problems and some solutions you’ve come up with, you’re showing initiative. This is a good thing and one of the best ways to get a micro manager off your back.

Micromanagement; Don’t Forget It’s Only A Job

Don’t forget it’s only a job. If you can’t take it anymore and you’ve tried earning their trust. They might be a jerk in charge. Don’t stay in an unhealthy environment any longer than is necessary.

If all else fails, mitigate the risk. Find a new job, cut and run. Life is to short to be unhappy, give it a shot, but in the end do what you gotta do.

I wrote an article a few months back called Fail To Succeed. This topic about why Entrepreneurs Fail is similar. Most people don’t realize that success is a process, and it usually is a long and stressful one. At the time of writing Fail To Succeed, I had two e-commerce websites that were averaging 5-10 views a month. I’d been working for over a year on them, and should’ve been happy to see some fruit from my labor. Instead I was depressed that it wasn’t gaining more traction.

I began to wonder if my time/effort was wasted, and started to look for work elsewhere. I thought maybe I wasn’t cut out for this life of entrepreneurship. Now that some time has passed and things are more clear. I see that I had the wrong motives, and the wrong timetable mentally.

A quote I say to myself often, is that I’m playing the long game. I’m building something that’ll be strong, and last a long time.

Slow and steady can still win the race.

Entrepreneurship Motives

Many people see the glitz and glamour of success and don’t understand how much work went into it. What you see on FB and Instagram are the finished products, and/or fake products. I’m sorry to tell you, but if there was a way to get rich in a few days, more people would’ve discovered it.

One of the things that annoys me whenever I log into YouTube/Facebook/Instagram is the endless barrage of get rich quick schemes, and every video thumbnail is in a similar formula. Usually it contains a muscular dude sitting/leaning on an expensive car. Or it has a beautiful women having fun somewhere.

I’m not saying those people didn’t work to get there, I’m saying you’re not seeing it. That is a huge difference.

The truth of entrepreneurship is thats it’s never easy. I’m projecting another year or two before I can get to full liquidity and actually write myself a check. (I’ve been doing this for 2 1/2 years).

Have I thought Of Giving Up?

Yes, I’ve wanted to give up multiple times. Being an entrepreneur is difficult, but the rewards are worth it.

The truth about why entrepreneurs fail, is a couple of reasons.

  1. Not Counting The Cost.
  2. Their Focus Is Wrong
  3. A Lack of persistence.
  4. It’s Seen As Too Much Risk

Not Counting The Cost

I’ve met a lot of people in entrepreneurship circles in the last few years. A few have achieved great success, while many have quit and they work regular jobs now. An excuse I hear is that they couldn’t hack it. They weren’t cut out for it.

I believe that to be a partially correct statement. From my experience. I’ve done the same thing. A few years ago I was a Project Manager for a Fortune 500 company, and I couldn’t stand doing the job anymore. I was stressed out beyond belief, my work was my life.

So one particular Friday while stressed out, I went into work, and wrote a letter of resignation. Two weeks later I was jobless, and trying to build something from scratch.

My first year I had multiple failures. Here’s a list of them, keep in mind these all came around in a 9-12 month period of time:

  1. Being a consultant project manager for a non-profit.
  2. Starting A Store On Amazon As A 3rd Party Seller
  3. Opening A Shopify Store
  4. Selling Items On Ebay
  5. Becoming A Mobile Closer.

There were 1 or 2 other things that failed so fast I can’t even remember them. The truth of the matter is, I shouldn’t have quit my job without a good business idea, proper business plan, and knowing how long it would be until I was profitable.

You Live And learn Right?

When Entrepreneurs fail, it can be from a lack of planning.

  1. Know your idea, backwards and forwards.
  2. Understand how you can make money off it.
  3. Even if you can make money off it, is the idea profitable for the amount of work you’ll put into it?
  4. Do you enjoy doing this? And will doing it kill, or increase that enjoyment?

Entrepreneurs Fail Because Their Focus Is Wrong

When I first started out as an entrepreneur, I had the wrong idea of how it was going to work. I had passion, but no plan. Truth be told I thought it was going to be easy. For example, I thought my Shopify store was going to be the best snowboard gear shop ever created.

In reality I sold junk products from China, and so did my competition (at least 50 other sites). I had nothing to differentiate my site from theirs, and that bugged me. I Thank God that I wasn’t a success, I don’t want my personal branding attached to that.

In reality, when you become an entrepreneur, you need to count the cost, and understand what you’re doing might take awhile. You might have success in a month, or it could take years. At the very least, it won’t be in your timetable.

To this day I struggle with focus for my websites. For one of them I’m trying to write my next book and the other I get sad every March, because snowboarding season ends and that means less visitors.

If you’re not passionate about what you’re idea, you’re not gonna make it. When the rain is falling, wind is blowing, and you hate what you’re doing. That’ll be the time you cut and run. However if you love your idea. You’ll hold on, and eventually you’ll fail enough that you’ll succeed.

Entrepreneurs Fail Because They Lack Persistence

I would say this is the #1 reason most entrepreneurs fail. They give up too soon. Sometimes a few steps from the finish line. You don’t know when your success will arrive, you have to keep going.

Now this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make changes. I had the multiple failed businesses, and they led me to ESterlingLLC (this Website) and SnoFallGear (My Snowboard Site).

I also have plans to expand and create a few other sites, right now I’m looking at costs and seeing what could be profitable.

There were many times I could’ve given up, and probably many more will come. However whenever I think I’m failing, that’s when I start looking at my plan. This is where I adapt and change things.

This is what I learned from my entrepreneurial failures:

  1. Being a consultant project manager for a non-profit.
    1. I Wasn’t Cut Out For This Work. I Was A Failure Before I Began. However I Did Learn About Running Websites.
  2. Writing My Book Hurricane Jerald
    1. While I Don’t Believe My Book Was A Failure, I Did Fail Marketing It. This Taught Me The Beginnings Of SEO
  3. Starting A Store On Amazon As A 3rd Party Seller
    1. This Led Me To Look At Snowboarding Gear Sales/Reviews/Articles.
  4. Opening A Shopify Store
    1. I Wanted This To Work, And It Was A Step Up From Amazon. However I had no way to Differentiate Myself, and I hated Selling Junk Products.
  5. Selling Items On Ebay
    1. Same Reasons As Amazon And Shopify
  6. Becoming A Mobile Closer.
    1. I Just Needed The Money, And Got Greedy

You’ll notice a trend, all of these happened in a progression. The Mobile closing is a little off but I needed to make money at the time, so I jumped at that chance.

Those failed business ideas, caused me to reevaluate what I was doing. Once I did that, I made adjustments and kept going.

You can do the same thing. Instead of giving up, look at your problems, learn from them, and make adjustments.

So, Does This Mean I Should Never Quit?

I’m not saying that. I shut down those stores and left those businesses when they failed, but there is a time you’ve failed, and it’s time to walk away.

The timing is different for everyone and depending on what business they are involved in. I’ve set goals and stops for myself. If I’m not achieving those goals I have to find out why, make adjustments, and move on from there.

When you evaluate things ask yourself if this is a setback, or a failure? When my business Makes less revenue than I projected one month, that’s a setback. However if that month turns into 6 months, that’s a failure. (and I should’ve been adjusting after the 1st or 2nd month already)

When you realize that the work to put in isn’t worth it, or the money coming out won’t be worth it. This is the time for you to cut and run. Use that experience on your next endeavor, and it changes into a learning experience.

Entrepreneurs Fail Because They Do/Do Not Risks

They fail because they take risks, and because they don’t. (Kinda Confusing isn’t it?) The trick is to see what risks need to be taken, and what ones you should be running from.

In all honesty, there’s some guesswork here, you can’t ever be 100% sure. Because that means there’s no risk. As an entrepreneur, everything you do has risk associated with it.

Understand that, and embrace it. That’s your life now.

Prior to making any decision do some research. Once you’re done with that weigh the cost, examine the data, and plot a course of action. Once you do that, you’ll have to live with your choices, but at least you won’t have any regrets

Over the last two decades there’s been a lot of people writing about the skill of leadership. Some of it has been amazing. John Maxwell is a leadership guru who’s probably taught millions of people how to lead. There’s also been a lot of bad advice written about it.

Leadership Is Influence. Nothing More And Nothing Less

In some of his books he also states that it’s neither positive or negative. I tend to fall into his line of thinking on that. Having people follow you is a skill and it’s one you can develop.

However a good question to ask yourself is, “When people finally start following you. Where exactly are you going to lead them?”

In our society we tend to only look at the positive side of leadership. We see the sparkly person leading a company, or an army officer leading his troops to victory in battle. But the other side, the one that lost, they had officers, and they’re leaders too.

What Is Leadership Skills?

Leadership skills are the ability for a person to direct and guide a group of people towards a common goal. Keep in mind the goal is neither positive or negative. It’s just a common one.

Hitler was a leader, and so was Churchill but look at the difference these two leaders had on the world. One (Hitler) made an extremely negative impact, while the other was mostly positive.

Leadership skills, can be utilized by all people. However, as leaders and followers we should be careful who we are following, and where we’re going.

It’s extremely important.

Is Leadership A Skill Or Trait?

I believe leadership is both a skill and a quality. It’s merely semantics but I will explain below.

Leadership skills can be developed early on pretty quickly. If you’ve ever seen a family with a lot of children. Watch the oldest couple of kids. They tend to exhibit leadership traits and tendencies because they receive a lot of practice doing it.

I’m from a family of 6 children. You better believe we got a lot of practice. Now this doesn’t mean the youngest children are doomed to a life of following. It just means they need to find their practice elsewhere.

However before we get into that, I wanna speak a little about the most important skills you should have.

Effective Leadership Skills And Traits:

This isn’t an exhaustive list. In fact I’ll probably update it from time to time, as I think of more great leadership traits and skills.

  • Leaders Need To Communicate Properly
  • They Need To Respect The Group
  • Be Organzied
  • Hard Working
  • Able To Handle Stress

So I stopped after these 5, mostly because they cover a lot of the good leadership skills I’d like to cover.

Leaders Need To Communicate Properly:

As a leader you won’t get far if you can’t tell the team your goals for the future. How will they know where to go, and what to do, if they don’t now your expectations.

They Need To Respect The Group:

Leadership is a skill, and when a leader doesn’t respect the group. They become a tyrant. That invites rebellion, members of the group slowing you down, and people leave.

When a leader doesn’t respect the others. That person becomes a leader in name only, and the rest of the group loses morale and focus.

Be Organized:

I’m not an organized person by nature. However I will bring people into my group that are. Usually I’ll let them come up with plans/solutions to help work through my disorganization.

If these aren’t your skills, add someone to the group who has those skills. It’ll help you immensely.

Hard Working:

It should go without saying, that a lazy leader loses respect and the ability to control a team. They won’t make it long, and the team will usually disband.

Handle Stress:

Good leaders can handle stress. This includes stress they have to deal with daily, and the stress of from their team.

The Most Important Leadership Skills To Have

Over the last decade I’ve read/skimmed a lot of peoples opinions on leadership, and one thing I never wanna do it tell you to lead others like I do. I’m a great leader, people love it when I’m in charge and we all have a good time, however not everyone can lead like me.

And I don’t have the skills to lead like others.

Inside each and every one of us there is are inherent skills that God has given us. They’re natural biases, strengths, and weaknesses. It’s nature vs. nurture but also where we have the best options for improvement.

Leadership Skill #1 Learn Who You Are

Until you know who you are, you’ll never be able to lead with total confidence. If you have no idea who you are or what your general make up is, you’ll just wind up copying the leaders around you.

That can lead to detrimental problems.

In my early 20s I had this problem, and I’d been in leadership roles for years prior to this. I was involved with an organization and dealing with a lot of family issues, and wound up mimicking a leader above me. He could get away with some of the things he was doing because of his personality, and I could not.

Because of my behavior, I had to quell a mutiny with my team.

However it was quelled because I’d learned point #2.

Leadership Skill 2 – Respect Those Around You

My failure and ultimately my victory came from this 2nd skill. I had failed to respect my team, and so my team disrespected me. To fix my failure, I humbled myself, and went back to apologize.

The rift was fixed there, but it took awhile for trust to be rebuilt. When you don’t respect people. They will not respect you, and then you’ve lost influence. Once that happens, you might as well be a manager who doesn’t care about his/here people.

How To Improve Your Leadership Skills?

The two skills I wrote above are universal. Whether your an extravert who grows a family like me, or an introvert that does the whole laze fair style of leadership. You have to know yourself, and you have to respect the people around you.

You Need To Practice

To improve how you lead, you’re going to need some practice. For me it took a few years of being in leadership positions and I’ve done it for a decade or two afterwards. Now I tend to be looked at as a leader even when I’m not trying. Most of the time I’m not, and I don’t want it.

It’s a skill that eventually just happens. Because when you find out who you are, and respect people. You develop influence, and inevitably you start to change the people around you.

Breaking The Enigma Of Leadership

I should’ve made this my top paragraph, but a lot of people view leadership as the person in the front leading the troops. That’s not entirely true. A leader is someone who can change the flow. If we only view the people on the front as leaders, than how can the quiet and shy people lead?

They can lead using their own skills and abilities. They can lead in small groups and individually. Eventually if they like, they can overcome their shyness and lead lots of people.

However, if leadership is influence. If a shy introvert influences the loud extravert, and that leader leads his/her people to greatness. Who’s the real leader here?

  1. Find Yourself – Learn Your Skill Set.
  2. Respect Those Around You
  3. Gain Influence, And Direct Toward Common Goals That Are Good.
